Jim Dennis is among the world’s most experienced and qualified instructors in the field of Linux and free software. He has taught at Motorola, SGI, Cadence, Wells Fargo, DTT (a subsidiary of Hitachi), among others.
Jim has been working with Linux for more than ten years, since before the release of kernel version 1.0. He has worked for major software firms including Quarterdeck, Symantec Peter Norton Group, McAfee, and Linuxcare. His consulting and contracting clients include Motorola, the U.S. Postal Service, and Quantum.
Jim is the co-author of the book Linux System Administration (New Riders, 2000), and has published articles in Linux Journal, Sys Admin, and other magazines. He is senior editor of the online Linux magazine Linux Gazette where he originated the popular “Answer Guy” column. Jim has given technical presentations and tutorials at LinuxWorld Expo, PC Expo, Comdex and other venues.
Jim co-developed Linux Professional Institute (LPI) training materials for Linuxcare, and taught classes there, internally and to customers. He has recently developed a revised set of LPI 1 materials for Bradford Learning Inc., for which he has also taught as a freelance instructor. Jim recently completely work on Bradford’s LPI 201 offering and is currently developing LPI 202 materials.
This class will cover the basic concepts and strategies of fighting spam and e-mail worms and viruses. We will install and configure best-of-breed free tools like SpamAssassin, MailScanner, AMaViS/ClamAV, ASK (Active Spam Killer) and TMDA (Tagged Message Delivery Agent). We will compare blacklists and whitelists, pattern matching and statistical (including Bayesian) techniques that are used by these tools.
We will consider the pros and cons of different disposition options (marking, encapsulation, stripping, quarantine, blocking), and discuss different interception points: socket, stream, MTA to LDA, LDA, and MSA/MUA. We’ll show how to block some spammers before wasting bandwidth and storage on their junk (in Postfix and sendmail) as well as the many “RBL” (real-time-blacklist) options that are available.
By the end of the day you’ll be able to secure your personal inbox or an entire site from the vast majority of all malicious and unwanted e-mail.
